Bangla Pohela Boishakh History
People of Bangladesh celebrate the biggest festival Pohela Boishakh. Most of them don’t know behind the history of Pohela Boishakh. You should know the story behind Pohela Boishakh as well as bangle noboborsho. This is Bengali New Year 1427.
The well-known Mughal Emperor Jalaluddin Akbar had introduced first Bangla year in 1584. That time the Bengal was used ‘shak’ calendar. According to that calendar the first month was ‘Chaitra’. As the name of ‘Tarikh-i-Elahi’ or ‘Crop Circle’ or ‘Fosoli Shon’ the Bengali calendar was known.
It was named first ‘Bangabde’ on the 10th or 11th march of 1584. Akbar’s reign was promoted this new year in the 27th year and it counted from 5th November 1556 AD. Emperor Akbar ascended on the bishop of Delhi on 963 AH, 10 Rabiul Awal, on Friday, 1479 Shakaabda, 1614 Vikramashthan, and according to English calendar on 14 February 1556. Only at the age of 13 he was defeated by Emperor Hemchandra Vikramaditya in the 2nd Panipat war.
After this glorify victory Emperor Akbar’s in 2nd Panipath War and to more revenue in a more diligent way the Bangla year was introduced.
There was no leap year at that time in Bangla calendar. To solve this problem Dr. Mohammed Sahidullah suggest counting Chaitra by 31 days after every four years. The Bangabda reform committee decided that Chaitra month will be count 31 days after every four years. And that year will be leap year in Bengali month.
According to the 2d most famous opinion, in the course of the Mughal period, socio-inexpensive activities like the tax giving rite on agricultural products and on agricultural land have been being arranged in accordance with the Hijri year.

How to Celebrate Pohela Boishakh 1427?

In 14th April, when the sun rises from that times the Bangla New year (নববর্ষ) starts. From the 1402 Bangabda, Bangla Academy promoted this system.
From the capital of Bangladesh I mean Dhaka the main celebration of Pohela Boishakh starts. Chayanat starts Pohela Boishakh celebrations with some cultural traditions. By playing rag music on flute they welcome the Bangla New Year. On the very early morning they start their twilight program. In this event around 150 artists are taking parts. The program starts at sharp 6.15 am and end after two and half hour at 8.30 am. They start the program with the most popular theme song of Pohela Boishakh,

After finishing the program the faculty of fine arts of Dhaka University organized ‘Mongol Sovajattra’. At the 8.00 AM they come out with their procession. The theme of their procession is ‘Man will be a golden man in vain’ for the previous year. More than 600 artworks participate in the rally. From the Fine Arts of Dhaka University campus the procession goes out and after come in Hotel Intercontinental (former Ruposhi Bangla) will end again in the Fine Arts of DU.
For the Bangla New Year celebration Shilpokola Academy organized a cultural program at the five-stage. Rabindra Sarani Battalaya of Uttara at 9 am, On Mirpur at 7 AM, at Bahadur Shah Park in Old Dhaka at 3 pm and at open premises of Shilpakala Academy on 4:30 pm folk cultural exhibition held.
Bangla Academy also organized cultural programs and lectures. It starts 7.00 AM and then they start cultural program at 7.30 PM. After all this they arrange a fair at the academy premises. There was held a 10 days Aarang & Boishakhi fair.
Every organizations, schools, college and universities are celebrating this day with great joy. The university’s campuses are decorated for this festival. They are also arranged cultural and traditional programs also. For junior schools they arrange art, singing and dancing competitions.
Bengali New Year 2020 Celebration
This year on the 14th April Tuesday the Bangla New Year 2020 will celebrate. From the first day of Pohela Boishakh the celebration starts. This year the Bengali New Year will turn 1427 according to the Bangla calendar. In Bangladesh this is a public holiday.
In this Bangla New Year beside Bangladesh the other countries like Assam, Tripura and mostly west Bengal of India celebrate this festival. Having so many Bengali communities in those states of India they celebrate this with joyful and great enthusiasm. Also it is a public holiday in those states too.
Pohela Boishakh Dress: On this occasion people come out with colorful dresses. But Pohela Boishakh has a dress code. Wearing anything combined red and white is the tradition of Pohela Boishakh dress. But people claim that females are beautiful in Saree. So, most of them ware red and white combined Saree and some of them young girls wear salwar kameez. The male wear punjabi, lungi or payjama. Some of them wear fotuya, shirt and pant also.

Pohela Boishakh Food: The main item of Pohela Boishakh food is Panta Bhat (rice soaked in water) and fried Hilsha fish. As Hilsha fish is our national fish they eat it but it’s not important. You can add any kind of fish in your item. Besides that various items of Borta you can add in this menu. Alo bhorta, eggplant bhorta, dal vorta, shukti bhorta (one kind of food item by dried fish) these kind of bhorta you can add in your menu list. At the beginning time of Bengal New Year, we have sufficient wealth. Also our rivers were keeping filled with varieties of fishes and also our national food was rice. That why a common proverbs say, ‘Mache Bhate Benglai’. From this concept, the Pohela Boishakh food tradition of Panta Bhat and Hilsha fries comes.
Boishakhi Mela: The main attraction of Pohela Boishakh is Boishakhi Mela. In the first period of the Bengali New Year celebration, it was celebrated in the villages. Mainly the mela is the common attraction for kids, because of lots of rides, toys, handmade toys. For the young the sweets shops are heaven in earth. You can get several of sweets which are home made in the Boishakhi mela festival. For girls here you will get handmade jewelries and some handmade handicrafts too. Several of foods and things are available here also. Mainly the mela held on rural areas but in last some few years it is also held in towns and cities too.
